NumbersUSA is a USA-based non-profit public policy organization that recommends limiting the number of immigrants allowed into the U.S. each year. It was founded in 1997 by Roy Beck, a former environmental journalist who wrote on issues such as urban sprawl. The organization has nearly 1.1 million members who describe the grassroots organization as “moderates, conservatives, and liberals working for immigration numbers that serve America’s finest goals.” It calls for more restrictions on the numbers of legal immigration, removal of undocumented immigrants, revoking the visa lottery and reformed birth citizenship right, and the elimination of chain migration.

NumbersUSA is based in Virginia, Washington DC, calls for the sustenance of an environmentally and economically just America, or in other words, it calls for the numerical reduction of immigrants. It acts on pressuring immigrant legislation officials to approve laws that protect all Americans from losing freedoms, wages, quality of life, and nature due to an influx in immigration numbers. The organization favors removing public benefits, jobs, and other incentives that attract illegal immigrants into the U.S. It also favors the accommodation of immigrants that are refugees with no plans of returning home, those that are a part of an American citizen’s nuclear family, and talented immigrants with beneficial skills.

They’re an offshoot of the “Federation of American Immigration Reform Organizations (FAIRO)”, which was founded in 1982 to represent the interests of citizens who believed in individual freedom and opposed mass-unlimited immigration.

NumbersUSA was created to respond to a 1996 argument made by two national commissions. One was a bi-partisan commission that sought the reduction of immigrants to about half of the total 1 million immigrants in the U.S. at the time. This commission was led by Barbara Jordan, a civil rights advocate. The other commission was under President Bill Clinton, known as The Presidential Task Force on Population and Consumption, established to advocate for reducing immigrants by a higher number than that proposed U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform.

NumbersUSA seeks to study and make recommendations on the numerical level of legal and illegal immigrants. It aims to eliminate illegal immigration and introduce an open visiting policy, which would allow people to legally study, visit and tour the U.S. for more extended periods.
