Bernard Acoca has achieved national acclaim as a performance artist and has toured extensively in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. His work as a solo performance artist is an ongoing investigation of personal identity in relation to sexuality, religion, class and gender.

Bernard Acoca’s Mission was to bring attention to a variety of social issues, including homophobia, sex addiction, and AIDS. He also performed as an anti-hate activist, addressing prejudice and racism.

He has published two collections of his writing: The Queer King Lear (Atelos Books) and Adventures in Social Justice Theatre (1998). He was one of the founding members of New York’s infamous anti-racist drag troupe MOMIX. Acoca is a graduate of City College, The New School for Social Research, and lives in the West Village.

Zaxby’s CEO has also helped to create and lead the community group, Re-Generation 2000, a group of LGBT business owners, who have pledged to hire people of color.

His career life and background have been told in the essay collection, The Hunt for Martin Luther King Jr. (2001). Acoca has recently published a memoir of his sexual coming out and the long-life history of HIV, entitled “The AIDS Tale” His new performance piece, “The AIDS Tale Revisited” will debut at the United Solo Festival on June 4th 2010.
